The erhu is tuned D and A. The thicker string, or inner string is tuned D and the thinner string, or outer string is tuned A. You can use the piano or a digital tuner to get the correct pitch.

When tuning an erhu with wooden pegs, place your thumb on the neck and push the peg in while turning the peg. If you do not do that, your peg will slip and the string will come loose.

For the inner string, turn in a clockwise direction to tune the pitch up.
For the outer string, turn in an anti clockwise direction to tune the pitch up.

You can install fine tuners on your erhu strings to make tune the pitch slightly.
